A friend of mine, Ricky Cawkey, and I grew up together as babies.

And we used to go wade fishing out of Port Lavaca.

And we was wade fishing one day, and it was about waist deep.

And we looked up, and the wind was blowing out of the south, and it looked like a shark floating, coming towards us.

A friend of mine and I were going to go outlaw hunting in Port Lavaca up on the Korean ranch.

Arriving at the windswept Texas coast at Port Lavaca, Lee witnessed an amphibious spectacle that captured the friction and often unprofessional nature of 19th century military logistics.

And there are smaller towns around Matagorda Bay like Texas.

Port Lavaca and Palacios and Port O'Connor and in Victoria, where I live.

So we kind of chose this area because it's been historically kind of a neglected area in terms of coastal bird conservation, where there was great people already working on the upper coast and on the lower coast.

But the mid-coast was kind of this gap that we were filling in.

So in the mid coast, there's the Matagorda Bay Bird Fest in Palacios, which is a really great smaller festival.

This was just their 10th year of the festival.

And then in Port Lavaca, they have the Midcoast Birding Festival.

These are both in April each year, which is a good time for bird migration and coastal bird nesting.
