G

And, um, we, we have a, we have a little bit of, um, of a problem on the island where we, we, we just don't seem to be making the right decisions, um, all over.

General Election 2026 Candidate Interviews: Richard Henthorn
R
24:36Richard HenthornGUEST
But, um, the islanders are specialized in, you know, sort of, um, technology-based or computer-based, uh, um, industries such as gaming and, uh, finance and insurance, et cetera.
R
24:50Richard HenthornGUEST
But we can branch out into, into newer technologies and, uh, one of the things that I, that did come to mind and I did some research on was there are some, there are companies now in Northern Europe that are doing a lot of research into, into wave energy and, uh, tidal energy, and, uh, we could encourage a university department of one of these universities to come over, like the, the, uh, the, the Port Erin, uh, um, uh, marine biolog- uh, uh, lab down there.
R
25:15Richard HenthornGUEST
We could, um, we could give them favorable terms to set up, um, uh, test tanks, et cetera, in order to test these tech-technologies and then, and put them on the north coast of the island round about the, the Point of Ayre, where they don't, they don't have any visible signs from above, uh, the water.
R
25:33Richard HenthornGUEST
And, and see if we can develop those and become a, a, a center for, for that kind of energy 'cause we have a lot of wave energy and it doesn't just depend on when the wind blows.
General Election 2026 Candidate Interviews: Helen Sheppard
H
8:57Helen ShepherdGUEST
I don't want to slate Rushen commissioners at all, but they were so defensive when speaking about the housing stock.
H
9:03Helen ShepherdGUEST
You know, they've got one of the oldest housing stocks on the island, and, um, they just, the, you know, their excuse was, "We haven't got enough money to put into these houses." But when you've got a whole constituency across Port Erin where the houses have not had maintenance and not had upkeep, uh, and people are living in those conditions, then you've got some very unhappy members of the public.
H
9:28Helen ShepherdGUEST
So I think if those people were able to come together for a citizens assembly, um, you know, i- if, if housing's affecting them and talk about the struggles, that brings the people's point of view to commissioner level and also government level as well.
H
9:45Helen ShepherdGUEST
And you take...
H
9:59Helen ShepherdGUEST
... and things like that.
P
10:01Phil GawneHOST
Um, and you, you mentioned there Rushen commissioners.
P
10:03Phil GawneHOST
I presume you mean either Port Erin, of course-
H
10:05Helen ShepherdGUEST
Uh, P- yeah, sorry, Port Erin commissioners, not Rushen-
Live Constituency Debate - Garff

42:42Richard HenthorneGUEST
But, you know, small high-tech businesses and broadening our economy into different areas is a great idea.
R
42:49Richard HenthorneGUEST
And I was interested in some developments in Northern Europe, in Holland, where they're doing some experiments on... tidal energy it's okay like a kite system that's ground anchored and anchored to the seabed so there's no nothing above the waterline um and they are going all the time it's not dependent on the wind the tide it goes in and goes out and it changes the direction and especially up around the north of the island point of air there's great opportunity for something like that to be trialed here and if we could get tied up with a european university pretty much like the uh the Marine Biological Center down at Port Erin where they had to come over and spend maybe a year of their study doing some experiments and we could make it attractive financially for them to come over and give them a unit at Jerby or somewhere where they could build tanks to test these things out and test out models and then take something of a larger scale and real and we could develop these kind of things.
R
43:46Richard HenthorneGUEST
There's also actually been quite a lot of development wind energy, but it's the personal wind energy, as they call it, behind the meter, which is a vertical pole in your garden, which goes round and it generates an amount of electricity, which You can store and then use peak times, and that's a great technology coming through.
R
44:06Richard HenthorneGUEST
We can do that kind of thing, and it also can work for our green credentials, and that's ours.
