It's 30 years since the Alannah & Madeline Foundation began, created by a dad in loving memory of his two girls who were tragically killed in the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.

The foundation has been instrumental in helping children to escape violence and feel safe and cared for.

Is it a simple case of immigration? Or is it more complex than that? John Howard was one such figure we turn to.

He successfully led Australia after the Port Arthur massacre and during the threat of terror after 9-11.

He's a strong conservative vicar and he's watched on, aghast, at what's unfolded over these past few years.

So Alex and I went to see him.

You know, I I feel like on both sides there is this very common phenomenon of politicians just losing their way and whether or not you have an insight into why that would be.

Yeah, so my – and this is an impression sort of unfortunately based on decades-long relatively professionally intimate contact with a lot of the players – I've found, especially over the last 30 or 40 years, if you look at that Hawke, Keating, Howard period, and especially from the opening of the economy up until Port Arthur, the response to the Port Arthur massacre and the major gun law reforms, that's a good dozen years, 12, 13 years, of very, very activist government, but doing things that also spoke to an idea, a concept of Australia being an outward-facing country.

giving them the opportunity to hear the argument and then explaining why you were doing difficult things.

Now, the context of the 80s and 90s are difficult to repeat because people forget that what preceded the 80s and 90s was a decade-long period of underperformance economically, but also very, very socially disrupted and sort of scratchy period.

You spoke about role clarity and role clarity is something I've been really conscious about in doing any sort of really challenging work that's not your BAU.

And I first learnt about the importance of that after the Port Arthur massacre when one of the police officers that was responsible for responding as the massacre was unfolding spoke at a conference and his message was the most important thing he needed for people to know going forward after their experience was that if you don't know what you're meant to be doing, you're really vulnerable and at risk because you'll always be questioning, have I done the right thing? And so having a measure of confidence about what is it you mean to be doing? Are you able to do it? Do you have the sufficient knowledge and skills to do it? is a way of being protective for our staff and for ourselves.

So that means that we're looking at knowledge and training.

It means we're promoting skills development and that there's ongoing supervision and mentoring and that nothing is static.

I think in terms of events that shocked us, really, it would be hard to go past the Port Arthur massacre.

It would be on most people's list.
