Preface.

The popular demand for the encyclicals and apostolical letters of a Roman pontiff is something so novel as to constitute of itself a proof of the esteem in which he is held.

The other articles on the sad endings of the conspirators and the wonderful indestructibility of Irish faith rest upon their own merits.

A discourse which aimed at illustrating the words of our Holy Father Leo XIII could not be complete without a reference to such societies as the wisdom of the great pontiff has pointed out as fitted for Christian men.

The author therefore speaks in favor of the excellent temperance society he found already in action, connected with the Catholic Institute as a sovereign antidote against secret societies of every description, and as the best remedy for those ills he could not help witnessing when passing through Edinburgh and other great centers of population in England and Scotland.

He plainly refers to the evil which certain idle agitators bring in those cities amongst poor, good-natured, but credulous Irish Catholic working men.

It places him in constant communication with, and therefore under, the special care of his pastor.

It is, in fact, the special antidote which our present Holy Father, whom may God long preserve to us, advises the bishops of the Catholic Church to employ throughout the world against the poisonous influence of those secret societies which the demon has rendered so general and so disastrous in our days.

Speaking of the operative classes, Leo XIII says in his celebrated encyclical, Humanum Genus, of this year, Those who sustain themselves by the labor of their own hands, besides being by their very condition most worthy above all others of charity and consolation, are also especially exposed to the allurements of men whose ways lie in fraud and deceit.

Therefore, they ought to be helped with the greatest possible kindness and be invited to join societies that are good, lest they be drawn away to others that are evil.

I think that he also told me they're going to have a little surprise for him, but I'm not going to reveal it, of course, on this program because we go out on Friday and that would be some days beforehand.

But it's great that Leo has accepted to come and be there for the opening of this exhibit.

Yeah, and as you were saying, since they're trying to make this a more public space, the exhibition is going to open to the public 10 days later after the Pope's birthday on September 24th.

And so there's a great interest in this.

A little less than two years later, Prevost was elected Pope, and chose the name Leo after Leo XIII, emphasizing a commitment to the rights and dignity of labour, and confirmed that he would pursue his predecessor's program of justice and equality, as well as a renewal of the radical reforms of the Second Vatican Council.

Perhaps most telling in his early moves was his appeal to all Catholics, the clergy as well as the laity, to collaborate in a renewed ministry, reestablishing the church as a global community that is not defined by politics or limited by national boundaries.

Addressing the 2025 National Catholic Youth Conference via satellite, his likeness beaming from the Vatican into Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Leo spoke directly to more than 15,000 young people gathered there.

They did that.

Again, I fully endorse Pope Leo XIII's admonition about the validity of Anglican sacraments and the rest of it, while also recognizing that many Anglican bishops and priests quietly after that document started a tradition where many of them will go and get conditionally ordained by somebody typically who is in formal schism with Rome but has valid sacraments.

And thus their sacraments would be valid and all the rest.

But that kind of got settled anyway once the Anglican Church started ordaining women and then consecrating women as bishops
