Pope Julius I

"Ink does not stain the soul," observed Eusebius lightly, as lie after lie took shape upon the paper.

The letter was sent to Rome by three trusty friends, but Pope Julius was not so easily deceived.

He knew more about the matter than the Arians thought, so much indeed that the chief of the three envoys left suddenly during the night, fearful of what might come to light on the morrow.

The two others, losing their heads completely, agreed to meet Athanasius at a synod at which the Pope himself would preside.

St. Podiman, who had narrowly missed martyrdom during the persecution of Diocletian, was scourged with rods until he died.

The many cruelties of the usurper made him so hateful to the Alexandrians that after four years of tyranny, he was killed by the mob in a sudden outbreak of fury.

Athanasius, meantime, had made his way to Rome, where he was received by St. Julius I as a champion of the faith.

The case should be tried in his own presence, the Pope declared, but it was impossible to get the Arians to Rome.
