Pope Benedict XII

Gregory XII recognized the authority of the council and surrendered the tiara.

Benedict XII held out obstinately at Perpignan and was solicited to retire by Sigismund in person.

At last, even his own Spaniards fell away from him and he was deposed in July 1417.

The papal throne was now vacant, and before the election of a new pope there was an opportunity for reforming the church in head and members.

No, sorry, Benedict XII published a papal bull called Benedictus Deus that defined the dogma that the blessed dead can see the vision of God even before the resurrection.

And so it's Catholic dogma now.

But it was a kind of a hazy area of Christian doctrine for a long time.

The beatific vision is not reserved for the final state alone, but is thought to be already accorded to the saints in the intermediate state between death and resurrection.

In the Apostolic Constitution of Pope Benedict XII, entitled Benedictus Deus, promulgated in 1336, the beatific vision is said to be enjoyed by persons in the intermediate state prior to their entrance into the final state.

I quote, All these souls, immediately after death, and in the case of those in need of purification, after the purification mentioned above, since the ascension of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ into heaven, already, before they take up their bodies again, and before the general judgment, have been, are, and will be with Christ in heaven, in the heavenly kingdom and paradise, joined to the company of the holy angels.

Since the passion and death of the Lord Jesus Christ, these souls have seen and see the divine essence with an intuitive vision and even face-to-face without the mediation of any creature by way of objective vision.

Yeah, there's only been two Cistercian popes, so that's kind of interesting.

The other is, of course, Pope Benedict XII in 1334.

So, first Cistercian pope.

Let's briefly, as a result, talk about what the heck the Cistercian order is.

I'd have to, um, and I'm sure it's reflected in some papal document somewhere, but that's not where it comes from.

It was the Pope Benedict XII in 1336 who recognized the long, long interval, and he, he designed the, uh, uh, the shorter upon death judgment.

He seems to be in limbo with Louis IV while he is the emperor and the HRE, and there's, yeah, it's not, nobody seem, you know, he's just like, he's there.
