Pontifical Biblical Commission

"For what the apostles preached in fulfillment of the commission of Christ, afterwards they themselves and the apostolic men, under the inspiration of the Divine Spirit, handed on to us in writing the foundation of faith, namely, the four-fold gospel according to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John." Um, and then before that, at the Pontifical Biblical Commission in the early 1900s, the Catholic Church held that Matthew and John genuinely wrote the Gospels.

Literally almost every major Protestant denomination would say the same thing.

Yeah.

You've got to protect them from the Canaanites.

that's the inspired part but moses he lives in a warrior society right and if moses lives in a warrior society what does he think of well what's the solution remember we're not yet at the time of the post-exilic prophets we're not yet at the time of jesus right the moral development has you know it's only gone to um what we call parity you know you can only take vengeance you know to to the same extent that people are you know have harmed you etc so we're not quite there yet in in the moral development that the pontifical biblical commission recognized these four stages right the patriarchal period very primitive moses huge leap forward at the um moses revelation then the post-exilic prophets these are the big ones right during the exile and post the exile you know, that we know of now, Jeremiah, Deutero, Isaiah, you know, Ezekiel, and so forth, so these major prophets.

And then finally, of course, we get to Jesus, the fullness of revelation.

So what, you know, Ratzinger says is there's an outer core that is wrapped around, as it were, this inner core of the message, which is inspired and inerrant.

That's why.

It's a very different culture without the benefit of Jesus.

And so you have to, those four periods that the Pontifical Biblical Commission talks about are really important.

Because a lot of moral development takes place.

Women indeed are made in the image of God.

Or what about a 1976 ruling from the Pope's own Pontifical Biblical Commission? Quote, there's no biblical reason to keep women from priestly ordination.

And finally, even at a synod with factual biblical research at hand, women's past religious positions, they keep giving the excuse of not seemingly to have enough information to make a decision one way or the other.

And the continual inference of, well, we need more study on this, But now it is sickeningly obvious all they are doing is stalling, period.

They're preventing what Jesus is asking of that woman.

And who are they to do that? And then on top of that, you have to remember back in 1976, the Pope has his own Pontifical Biblical Commission.

And they actually had a commission that was looking into that question of woman being priest.

And that commission said explicitly, there is no biblical reason why women can't be priests.

So that was a third great achievement, the first social encyclical published.

Then he went and set up the Biblical Commission, Restoring the Bible to Theology and Prayer.

That was in 1902.

And during the course of his pontificate, fifthly, he approved the new modern constitutional arrangements between church and state, which separated church and state, or at least made them distinct.

And so that distinction is highly important.

And then the church has basically a Pontifical Biblical Commission that has articulated moral development as well in the Old Testament and New Testament.

So the four stages of moral development.

So we talk about those principles and try to apply them.
