Pontiac Grand Am

For 76 and 77, they were refreshed with quad-stacked rectangular headlights.

The fifth and final generation debuted for 78, now based on the A-body chassis shared with the Regal, Grand Am, and Malibu, among others.

Smaller but on a longer wheelbase, it came in three trims, El Camino, Conquista, and SS, and with four engine options, a 3.3 liter and a 3.8 liter V6, and a 305 and 308 V8s.

Also offered in 78 was the extremely rare Black Knight option, later renamed as the Royal Knight.

But these weren't the only experiments in the American market.

GMC got versions of the third and the fourth generation El Camino, known as the GMC Sprint, and of the fifth generation El Camino as the GMC Caballero.

In 1974, there was a Pontiac Concept with a front from a Grand Am.

In 1992, there was a Concept El Camino based on the Lumina Z34.
