She may have been playing a role as defined and curtailed by the Duke, one that would see to her own financial stability, but Viola always made the role her own, and was never just a minder to keep Gwen under control.

At times, she is almost like a jester in a similar way to how Pomni in Digital Circus is a jester, where Pomni's attire codifies her as a jester, but nothing she ever does in the show really supports the idea that that is what she is there to do.

It just feels like it is something that is an amusing counter to her very anxious and sincere disposition.

And I think for Viola, she is made a jester because that is really what all the infrastructure will allow her to be.
