A letter meant to show solidarity with Iran's political prisoners has instead triggered an extraordinary ideological fight.

Some signatories have withdrawn.

A rival letter has emerged, and that argues that political prisoners should be seen through the struggle of American imperialism, Israel, and the legacy of the 1979 revolution.

So why did supporting people imprisoned by the Islamic Republic become an issue of American imperialism in Israel? How did it become like this? What I think

was a bit surprising for me was the incredible vitriol in response to the letter.
