Pokémon Detective Pikachu

And video games have some of the best stories.

But then all of a sudden it worked with Super Mario Brothers and Detective Pikachu.

And then like they do like The Witcher and then they do The Last of Us.

And it's like, it could have worked the whole time.

You guys just were doing

it wrong.

Well, the funny thing about that is, is they've had more success with games with less narrative structure, with movies with less narrative structure, like Detective Pikachu is basically its own story.

And the same is, you know, with Super Mario Brothers.

Lots of throwbacks to his old Ace Ventura performances.

Detective Pikachu, I genuinely think that's closer to an actually really good movie.

Detective Pikachu towards the end kind of loses it when they need to up the stakes for the sort of action finale.

But I think the idea of doing... a detective thriller, but it just happens to have a Pikachu in it, is kind of nuts.

But I think I really had a lot of fun with Detective Pikachu.

I think that's a lot.

That's genuinely quite well-written and very well-performed.

Justice Smith, main dude in Detective Pikachu.

Kathryn Newton from Lady Bird.

She's in Detective Pikachu, and she's Ant-Man's daughter, Cassie.

Adrian Kali Turner, who was in Herpes Boy.

Uh-oh.

I think it beats out Detective

Pikachu.

That's

a

Yeah, I mean, it's not hard competition.

I feel like there hasn't been a lot of good ones.

Like I said, previous to this point, I think Detective Pikachu held the title of best live action video game movie.

But yeah, Resident Evil, it takes it.

I'm gonna say, this is really tricky, and there's a huge chance for failure, but I think there's also a huge chance for success, a new Pokemon movie not connected to, like, the Ash series of Pokemon movies.

More Detective Pikachu.

Animated in a more modern style, maybe even live action, but, like, probably not because I think-

Detective Pikachu style?

Yeah, De- Detective Pikachu style, but, like-

All right, you gotta answer one question for me.

Is Pikachu gonna almost get killed by getting hit in the guts with a rock?

I, I f-

If you are willing to be cognizant of this thing that you're making is another thing and that other thing has its own rules that it is defined by, why can you not just do that in another medium and, and, and just, again, not belabor the point, but just do it? And that's what this movie, I think, makes the case for doing.

I have not seen a video game movie that does this, that goes, "You know what? We're just gonna live within video game logic." Even Detective Pikachu was trying to make, like, a, the, this is the, the real world.

Like, oh my God.

Like, come, fucking come on.

This, this is, I think, set a good example for future filmmakers as to how to adapt a video game successfully.

And this is not, like, the first successful video game movie.

I would say, like, Detective Pikachu kinda had that beat.

Like, Detective Pikachu came out and was pretty good.

De los últimos años, sí, definitivamente.

¿Detective Pikachu?

Esa sí estuvo recontra, recontra chistosa.

Ah, sí.

I mean this genuinely, and I think it is an apt comparison.

I think this movie is kind of like Detective Pikachu for Pokemon.

I would

say that,

It has all these Easter eggs and fun little references for everyone who loves the franchise, and you get to be like, that's the thing, and that's the thing, and oh my god.

But it doesn't cut off, because I don't give an F about Pokemon.

Like I loved Detective Pikachu.

Yeah.
