And he was, um, said to be, you know, one of the ones who was to blame for it.

Both Der Spiegel and Taz are speculating that one of Hanning's motives for his treasonous behavior might have been financial problems.

He reportedly was a board member of the Latvian bank PNB Banka, then run by Russian businessman Grigory Gazelnikov, which went under in 2019 after a failed investment deal.

Since Hanning was the board member responsible for compliance at the bank, he's apparently on the hook for at least part of, quote, a two-figure million euro sum the creditors want to recoup.

After a Latvian court decision, at least two-thirds of Hanning's pension are supposed to have been frozen.

Hanning was also previously smearing Latvia.

He joined the supervisory council of Norvik Banka, later PNB Banka, which subsequently collapsed.

An insolvency administrator later brought a $36 million damage claim against the former board and supervisory council members, including Hanning.

During the process, Hanning publicly made sweeping allegations of corruption about Latvian officials and institutions.
