Of course, the Apocryphon of John continues to riff in this really amazing way on the Genesis creation story, where in the Genesis creation story, the human beings are told not to eat of the Tree of Knowledge, and when they eat of the Tree of Knowledge, it actually condemns them for having rebelled against God.

However, in the Apocryphon of John, it is precisely because that they disobey Yaldabaoth, they eat from the tree of knowledge that they gain understanding of their plight, and it is there that they can begin the process of working toward their own salvation, escaping the prison that is the Garden of Eden, and eventually making their way back to the divine Pleroma.

So in the Apocryphon of John, the Garden of Eden story is not a fall from grace, but it is in fact a kind of a liberation, or at least the process, the start of a liberation from the prison of the physical world back into the divine Pleroma.

After their expulsion from the garden, Yaldabaoth actually sexually assaults Chava, or life.

This produces two demonic entities which rule over the physical human body.

You see how this works? This is Gnosticizing that he's engaging in, and it doesn't mean that he's teaching the Pleroma and Yaldabaoth and all that kind of stuff.

That was a myth long ago that had it-- served its purpose to attack the veracity of the Scripture.

This is a new myth, a new conspiracy, new secret knowledge that he's trafficking in, all designed to get you away from trusting the Scripture, but you can trust him.

As one writer noted, I'll quote Irenaeus here on the subject of Ptolemy.

Ptolemy was a second century Gnostic, He said, Ptolemy also maintained that all the rituals and sacrifices of the Mosaic law were an image of the Pleroma, which is their word for the Gnostic heaven, and that these were practiced spiritually, not literal sacrifices.

Apparently, they did rituals for the achievement of their visionary or spiritual state, but as far as I know, we have no details about what those procedures were.

And along with verse 17 in Colossians 2, there are alternative theories about what Paul meant by the body of Christ, but I'm not going into that question here.
