Play It Again, Sam

So he's got a challenge now, and, uh, Sam didn't do anything wrong the other night.

So, uh, to misquote Casablanca, "Play it again, Sam," then.

[laughs]

Yeah, I think Martin O'Neill will, will say that

hand Humphrey Bogart says? Play it again.

No, he doesn't say play it again, Sam.

He said, you played it for her, you can play it for me.

Oh, there we go.

Yeah.

But then Woody Allen did that movie, Play It Again, Sam.

So everybody thinks he said that.

Yeah, but he didn't say that.

She moved to New York and changed her last name to Keaton and moonlighted in clubs with a singing act.

Keaton got a job as an understudy for a Broadway production of Hair and then won the co-lead with Woody Allen for Play It Again Sam, which earned her a Tony Award nomination.

She made her film debut in 1970 in a small role in the comedy Lovers and Other Strangers.

After a few roles on TV, she was catapulted into fame by appearing as Kay Adams in The Godfather, a role she described as, quote, a woman in a world of men.

Yeah, that's a great – yeah.

I mean, again, there's a whole other podcast just devoted to the Godfather movies.

And I would imagine, right, if you're Diane Keaton and you are coming from a background, you've been in hair and on stage, and then you get to do Play It Again Sam, and then you do this Lovers and Other Strangers movie where you're kind of only have a couple scenes, and then you just – boom, you explode to that level where now every film that you do is now partly at least a Diane Keaton film.

You're not probably prepared for that, right? If that's not what your goal is to become a huge star, you just want to be an actor.

Diane Keaton, famously a California native, started out on the stage in the Broadway production of Hair.

worked her way up in bit parts on TV and film before coming to prominence with a double whammy in 1972 of Play It Again Sam and The Godfather, both of which launched her into leading lady territory.

And I'm just going to let you take it now because you have a, you know, your pick is a, it's The Godfather 2.

Let's just say it.

You know, as in, "Play it again, Sam."

Right.

Um, but, uh, but I guess w- i- part of my brain itches with making some kind of reference to Sam, serious acclimation module-

Um, but, uh, yeah.

Play It Again, Sam, 1972.

Plot: a neurotic film critic obsessed with the movie Casablanca attempts to get over his wife leaving him by dating again with the help of a married couple and his illusory idol, Humphrey Bogart.

So, and this is again where his friend...

Mm-hmm.

And Hair debuted in '68 off Broadway, but it didn't reach Broadway until '69.

So I think the play Play It Again, Sam was probably late '69-
