Plankton

Thank you so much for being here today.

My name is Clark Marchese, your host, and I have been waiting to do an episode on plankton for a very long time.

And then a couple of weeks ago, I got my hands on a book called The Power of Plankton, How Plankton Made Life on Earth Possible and Why It Is Key to Our Future.

And upon finding this book, we needed to move the timeline up on our plankton episode to today.

It was time.

Yeah, fine.

I'm senior advisor at the United Nations on ocean.

I'm also the author of The Seaweed Revolution and The Power of the Plankton.

And there's no definitive way with the research that I did on this that you think, well, what percentage of algae is green? They really can't, scientists that I read here, they really can't identify that, right? Because there's tens of thousands of algae species, right? So just because the ones that we see are green doesn't necessarily mean that that is a huge percentage.

Okay, SpongeBob, his nemesis, his friend, depending upon the day, Plankton.

Is he algae? What's up with him? Well, the tiny algae that floats through the water are part of this group known as phytoplankton.

The word plankton does not describe one particular species.

They include, yes, tiny animals along with the eggs and young forms of some larger animals.

And this is where SpongeBob enters our story.

The character Plankton from SpongeBob is supposed to be a copiopod.

A copiopod is a tiny crustacean.

And meanwhile, while Penny's with the clone family, they're about to take off and leave because the mission is to go find the secret formula.

Because Dr. Carver's basically got the same level of integrity as Plankton.

When she is going to go back on the boat, she drives the boat, I'm assuming erratically.

We get another little bit with Trudy where she doesn't understand her daughter's slang.
