Planet Hulk

It's over there.

So I started reading Planet Hulk, the comic book that Thor Ragnarok is based on.

It's really good.

I like it a lot.

There's a reason why it's one of the best Hulk stories.

Very good.

Do you ever watch those, Obi? Oh, the Planet Hulk movie? Yes, I did, yeah.

It's a little different, though, because Beta Ray Bill's in that movie instead of the Silver Surfer.

As Banner lands on Sakaar, we see through a flashback that he has changed into the Hulk as a survival mechanism, and has been the Hulk for over two years.

On this planet, people accept him, they cheer him on, he is their champion, a very loose adaptation of Planet Hulk.

It feels as though Ragnarok's Hulk mixes in the two most common Hulk personalities, Jofixit, the Grey Hulk, and Savage Hulk, the common Green Hulk, with the appearance of Green Scar.

The Joe Fixit aspect of this Hulk comes alive after his fight with Thor.

I've read it before, of course, but I wasn't able to get back to it.

Basically, the Illuminati sends the Hulk into space.

Planet Hulk happens where he lands on a planet and has to basically take it over and become the king of it, the world breaker.

And then he gets really mad when his life and family is destroyed by a bomb or by the ship he was on exploding and causing massive death.

Um...

Planet Hulk, as well, is just another honourable mention.

Just, well, I forgot to mention that at the top, actually, just a few other graphic novels.

Yeah, Planet Hulk and World War Hulk, beautiful stories.

And there's loads.

There's so many, yeah, graphic novels where I think people are quick to dismiss that a little bit because it's got pictures.

Uh, hearing you talk about it now, uh, I mean, it sounds like a little bit of an extension.

Not, not exactly the same story, but a little bit of an extension of what you did on Planet Hulk in terms-

Oh, yeah

... of having these different districts, these areas all having to work together for a common goal or maybe even, like in, was it Lawful, the book that you did for-

Mm-hmm

... um, and grapples with these things from a different angle.

But I, I'm, I'm fairly certain that Nate Cosby, the editor of this book, reached out to me, uh, because we worked together on Planet Hulk back in the day.

Yeah.

This is episode 511, and today I'm joined by award-winning filmmaker and comic writer Greg Pak.

now prior to breaking into comics greg pock had a couple of award-winning short films under his belt like robot stories his first official comic work would come in 2004 in the form of a four-issue warlock series alongside artist charlie adler and since then he's gone on to write over 600 plus comic books that's a whole lot of word bubbles that's a whole lot of text including marvel's blockbuster stories planet hulk and world war hulk he's also written mech cadet u for boom studios which later became an animated tv series for netflix and he did a record setting 50 plus issue run on marvel's star wars darth vader series Fast forward to today and Greg will be the new writer of Dynamite Entertainment's Thundercats line of comics starting Thundercats number one, which is hitting shops on Wednesday, October 7th.

Greg will be joined by artist David Cousins and colorist Igor Monti for a fresh new chapter in the Thundercats history books.

So we've got plenty to talk about between the new Thundercat book, all the stuff he's written at Marvel and in other places.

I was telling you prior to us hitting record that you are a writer.

You're a name that I follow, that has followed me throughout my entire comic book journey.

I was telling you that Planet Hulk is one of, is literally the first... comic book I put on my pull list when I got my own pull list, uh, at the age, I don't know, I was like 16, 17.

And my dad took me to this shop that I cannot recall for the light.

Planet Hulk? Planet Hulk, yeah.

Planet Hulk would have been good.

Which should

seem like they were going to do with the She-Hulk.

were going to tease his son at the end of the She-Hulk show.

Well, yeah, that's like, what the hell happened with that, right?

Yeah, and that would have been awesome, because you literally had half of the crew of Planet Hulk in the Thor movie, in Thor Ragnarok.

So it gives them an option to do it.

But I mean, that is why instead of having a Planet Hulk movie, we had Ragnarok, which folded Planet Hulk into it.

I don't know that it was to the detriment of that film either because I really enjoyed that film.

I think Taika Waititi did a great job on it.
