Pit-Fighter

They both look like fight- f- fighting games, whereas stuff like Street Smart, the late '80s SNK game which is technically a fighting game, doesn't really look like fighting games as we think of them today.

It's more of a arena brawler like, uh, like Pit-Fighter or something.

Which is funny, since Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting are just, like, very weird by fighting game standards.

[laughs] Yeah.

But it plays really well.

I think the earlier example of maybe Pit Fighter was a game that did that kind of what we would now call mocap, but photographing the actors doing stuff and then translating that into the game.

Obviously it had been done in games in different ways before, but I guess Pit Fighter was the sort of proto-Mortal Kombat, which was the same sort of thing, but you walked around a slightly more 3D arena and fought various tough dudes and people.

Um, but yeah, Mortal Kombat, I think it played, you know, that it, all of those things came together really, really well to create a game as a lot of fun.

Um, it combined, you know, I guess the, you know, the whole feel of it, the music, the, the, the, the playability of it, the cool over the top combat that is there, the big silly flying kicks you can do that are ridiculous, but then, you know, the heart, you know, just alone in the get over here, right? That alone is, If that's the one thing you've achieved in your game, you've got an amazing game, right? And that was just one of many things.

Yeah, I mean, I think what they got right, I mean, they got a tremendous amount of marketing right for doing what they did and doing it as controversially as they did.

I mean, you know, they did do something quite different.

You know, they did something technically very, very impressive with that game and made it in a game that, you know, whereas Pit Fighter was kind of cool, it didn't, my recollection of it is it didn't play very well online.
