Pinechas

Let's see the Gondola on Yom Kippur, King Morris says.

It has the line from Achai Mois, then from Emor, and then from Pinchas.

So between Achai Mois and Emor, they're not such a long, so he can roll it while the Turgimon is saying over.

But from Emmer to Pinchas is a long road.

So he can't keep everybody waiting.

So he has two options.

If he has another Sefer Torah, and he'll lane from the second Sefer Torah, he won't keep the people waiting.

Or he'll say it about that.

He says both, and it's Achrei Mot is in Vayikra.

Ach Vaytzar, Shabbos, and Shabbos Kibbud is in Pinchas.

So, so that's all the same thing.

Haftarah says it's not the same.

In Achrei Mot, you have the additional korbonos that are brought for Chatayot.

And in Pinchas, you have the mesafim.

It's not the same.

They're different korbonos.

The book of census, because there's a census in the beginning, in Nasso, Bamidbar Nasso.

There's a census in the end, in Pinchas.

In between those two, 40 years elapse, or 38 years elapse.

So the census are the bookends, literally, to denote the 38-year passage through the Midbar.

In fact, he loses his leadership of Nevuah.

Somebody else gets elected in this week's haftarah, or in this week-- in this, uh, today's parashat, that is to say, the parashat that serves as the haftarah for Parashat Pinchas.

Um, in our parashat, uh, Eliyahu is told to go ahead and start training Elisha ben Shafat to take over for him.

So what's going on over here? Um, i-is Eliyahu's kinah a proper, uh, kinah or is it not a proper kinah? When is it supposed to be used? When is his zealousness appropriate? When is it not? So many of the meforshim are quick to point out that Chazal tell us Pinchas Eliyahu, that Pinchas and Eliyahu were one and of the same.

That they shared the similar, um, neshamah.

They perhaps were the same person, just different names.

Um, and Pinchas also we know i-is found in regard to, uh, receiving his, his reward.

We're told [Hebrew] Pinchas is rewarded for ta-taking care of, uh, his zealousness.

Moshe, first of all, Moshe wasn't born yet.

[laughs] How could Moshe Rabbeinu be in Besagam in the Mabol when he's not born until later on? So the Zohar HaKadosh asked this question in Parashat Pinchas.

And the Zohar HaKadosh says a phenomenal Chiddush.

The Zohar HaKadosh says the Mabol was not really supposed to be a Mabol of Mayim in the times of Noach.

Rosh Hashanah, as I mentioned, I think the first night in the Torah, and we say it's the beginning of the new year.

However, in Parashat Pinchas, that means Bamidbar or Numbers, chapter twenty-nine or Perek Kaf Tet.

"Uva-ḥodesh ha-shvi'i be-ekhad la-ḥodesh," in the seventh month on the first day of the month, "mikra kodesh yihiyeh lachem," it should be a holiday.

"Yom teruah yihiyeh lachem." That is the day or the blowing of the shofar.

Let me explain what I mean.

We have this phenomenon in the story of Pinchas.

In the story of Pinchas, Pinchas has a moment, a moment where he's ready to shine.

A moment where he's going to stand up for what's right.

He does what he does with tremendous bravery and courage.

And the Gemara tells us in Masechet Sanhedrin, with a healthy dose of miracles.

And then the Torah stops and ends the parasha on that note.

We begin the next week's parasha, parashat Pinchas, and Hashem says, this is the reward for Pinchas.

In, uh, in Sefer Bamidbar, we find that the, uh, that there's, uh, a penalty for one who gathers wood on Shabbos, the mikoshesh etsim.

Uh, and, um, in the list of korbanot in Parashat Pinchas, we find, uh, the unique korbanot of, uh, of Shabbos, again, reflecting its sanctity.

And in Devarim, in the repetition of the Asarat HaDibrot, we have Shabbos there as well.

Uh, no, uh, no fewer than fifteen times does the Torah mention Shabbos, but rarely does it give the particular halachas.

And Hashem spoke to me, saying...

This perek is the Haftorah for either Pinchas or Matos, depending on how the calendar falls out.

It's the one that's typically read before the Ben HaMitzarim, before the three weeks between Shavassar B'tamos and Tisha B'Av.
