The Pine Creek Rail Trail runs for 60-some miles along the bottom of the gorge on an old railroad grade, and in July of 2019, Denise was riding the stretch south of Blackwell by herself, late, trying to get back to her car before dark.

The creek was low, the way it gets in July, with gravel bars showing and the water running thin over the riffles.
