A Frenchman named Pierre Plantard, who in 1956 had registered an organization called the Priory of Sion, grafted his own invented mythology onto the village.

Working with the author Gérard de Cèdre, whose 1967 book brought Rennes-le-Château to a national audience, Plantard's produced the coated parchments Saunière had supposedly found.

An associate of Plantard later admitted he'd fabricated them himself, and forged genealogies were planted in the National Library in Paris to support the hoax.

Following the unification of the various powers into a secret New World Order government in 1954, the Priory of Sion had a major policy dispute.

In 1963, with Cocteau's death, Gaylord Freeman, helped by Antonio Merzagara and Pierre Plantard de St. Clair, governed the Priory of Sion.

In 1981, Pierre Plantard took over as Grand Master.

in 1952, long before becoming Grand Master Planter de St. Clair, transferred 100 million francs worth of gold to Switzerland to the Union des Banques Suisses.

When this was publicly revealed, he said that it was a legitimate move made for the French government.

So, so according to this, it was a fraternal organization founded and dissolved in France in 1956 by hoaxer Pierre Plantard in his failed attempt to create a prestigious neo-chivalric order.
