Pie Town

But it's always the same old thing with you.

From the beginning of my walk, when I would meet different cross-country travelers, they would mention this place called Pie Town.

[gentle music] And it's just this hiker, biker haven.

The only thing they have is a pie shop.

I know the world keeps moving on.

But I'm stuck in the moment, and I can't let go.

So I'm out of Pie Town, and a woman starts coming up the road, and she's pushing a cart that looks very similar to mine.

[laughs] And I was just like, "Hi, I'm Jessica." Her name was Nora.

I don't know what they're doing, but we know who they are and where they are every single moment from the time that they enter this area.

And by area, I mean from as far away as Show Low Pinetop, Nutrioso, Alpine, Pie Town.

Our people are everywhere.

And as soon as they're spotted, they're tracked wherever they go.

I just hunkered down and just mashed my petals as much as I could.

And I get into Pie Town, and I'm super stoked to be in Pie Town.

And the little cafe was open.

Garcia Richard, a Democrat who has roughly four months left in her term and is running for lieutenant governor, said at a news conference in front of the steps of her office's Santa Fe headquarters that the longstanding environmental and public health impacts of uranium contamination outweigh any potential revenues to state coffers uranium mining could provide.

She said the executive order is needed now, in particular amid a recent uptick in uranium extraction proposals statewide, including in the Grants Mineral Belt, Canilon, and Pie Town areas.

She attributed the renewed interest to Donald Trump's administration, which has sought to fast-track federal permits for uranium mining and identified two such proposals on Cibola National Forest land near Mount Taylor as priority projects.

New Mexicans have been overlooked by the uranium industry and the federal government for far too long, and now the Trump administration is once again completely ignoring these communities and pushing for aggressive uranium development nationwide, despite the fact that there are still thousands of sites that are abandoned and need to be remediated, she said.
