And in the Melbourne Cup, because this is November we're talking about, I think Big, I should have actually asked you if you knew who won the Melbourne Cup because that was a pretty famous win, Bart Cummings' second, I think it's his second Melbourne Cup win.

And what else happened? Picnic at Hanging Rock premiered on the 8th of August and Cyclone Tracy happened in 1975, quite an eventful year.

I tell you what this film isn't.
JohnHOST

It isn't Picnic at Hanging Rock, and it isn't Walkabout, or even Mad Max.

It doesn't have that.
JohnHOST

It's really unusual, but I, I, the best way I could put it, I kind of called it cosmic coming of age film, which kind of makes sense.
Elric KaneHOST
83:12
It's the only movie I can think of that really reminds me of the vibe of picnic at hanging rock.
Elric KaneHOST
83:17
that feeling.
Elric KaneHOST
83:18
So it's not set in that era, but just that weird, uncanny feeling that isn't quite horror.
Jamelle BouieGUEST
92:16
couple of recommendations of just things I've recently seen.
Jamelle BouieGUEST
92:21
I recently watched the Peter Weir film Picnic at Hanging Rock, which is the closest thing to a Halloween movie I've watched this year, this month so far.
Jamelle BouieGUEST
92:31
And it's great.
Jamelle BouieGUEST
92:32
The best way I could describe it is it's like you're watching someone's memory of a dream.
BradHOST

FredHOST

yeah uh yes like air force one except this is nothing like air force one at all this is a i was about to say this is a great movie i love air force one air force one's a great movie too but uh this is a very very different movie uh you see harrison ford kind of he's playing a different sort of character than what we have seen him before this before i think this movie came out in the mid 80s so it is him coming off of being uh indiana jones for a while and it's a very different character uh i gotta say the works of peter weir they are great uh this movie is a masterpiece uh he also made one called picnic at hanging rock that movie is amazing everyone should find picnic at hanging rock i i highly recommend it it's a great movie And, yeah, that's what I'm going to say.

SarahHOST
48:47
No.
SarahHOST

But it reminds me of Cannibal Holocaust because Cannibal Holocaust has this absolutely beautiful sort of melodic score that feels like it should be more at home in something like Picnic at Hanging Rock,
DanHOST

but i yeah i can't think of her quite that young like she's got to be like 15 or 16 i don't know what she looked like she just looked little yeah she had that delicate i had and this is just because i think she is a nausicaa like character but in one of my favorite movies of all time picnic at hanging rock the girl who plays miranda her name is ann louise lambert for Nausicaa you need to have that just innocence that kind of blonde beauty I picture her as blonde but also just a lot of bottled up like sexuality that like exudes through your pores while at the same time being like the most beautiful ethereal kind of so I think she would be a good Nausicaa essentially giving the same performance she gives in the first part of Picnic at Hanging Rock before she well I won't spoil anything yeah that's what
David PizarroHOST
30:12
yeah I'm just looking at pictures of her Almost Daryl Hannah-esque.

which is an extremely strange and dark and sad movie about this young boy in rural Ireland during the Cuban Missile Crisis who is... showing signs of increasing deviant behavior to the point of eventually murder um but but like the the kind of tenor of it is that like it'll be like so dark and fucked up but then like kind of highlight that he is just like a kid so there's like this scene there's a scene that i just remember from re-watching a few years ago where he's like out on a beach and he's like sort of like crying and then he he stops but then just starts again like it's it's i mean he's he's kind of an annoying kid but it's like a really great kid performance
Steven SantanaHOST
23:04
okay uh yeah the guy who plays jeremy here is really good he doesn't talk much but despite that you basically feel like his presence sort of hangs over like the entire film yeah which made me which made me think in combination with this film using the same movement from uh beethoven's piano concerto number five in e flat major uh because that is also used in picnic at hanging rock And Picnic and Hanging Rock is another film in which the young women who are sort of disappear, even though they disappear fairly early on in that film, probably within the first third, that disappearance and their sort of lack of presence haunts the rest of the film.
Steven SantanaHOST
23:56
And that sort of is something that's happening here, too, where it's like Jeremy, even though he's not present for the entirety of the film, but he sort of haunts the entirety of the film and the characters as they sort of progress with their lives.
Steven SantanaHOST
24:08
um and i thought it was just very funny because as soon as i started hearing that uh music track within the film i was like oh wait is this this is a picnic hanging rock and then i looked it up and i was like oh yes it is uh and then as the film kept going i was like oh okay maybe there's maybe there's a little intentional that uh uh usage there probably not but
