What are women's voices like and how are they perceived? My guest today is Jane Setter, Professor of Phonetics at the University of Reading, who's written about voice quality, pitch and gender discrimination.

Six should never become a shortcut around research.

All right, now let's talk about the second one, phonetic.

Phonetic serves a very different purpose.

When phonetic notation is permitted by the applicable transcript style guide or entity that you're working with, it generally tells the reader, Okay, I heard this word or name clearly enough to represent how it sounded, but I could not verify the spelling.

Proper names are a common example.

If you can't hear the word at all, follow the required procedures for inaudible or unintelligible material.

Don't invent a word that vaguely resembles the noise and then protect yourself by adding phonetic.

Phonetic does not mean, this is my wild guess.
