And we start at Siem Reap, which is Angkor Wat, Cambodia, one of the great wonders of the world.

We sail the Mekong River visiting the big cities like Saigon and Phnom Penh.

And then the backwaters, where few tourists ever see.

And we're going to have a lot of fun.

utilities might run around 50 to 100 a month put everything together rent food utilities transportation and everyday expenses and someone living simply could realistically target around 600 to a thousand a month here health care is inexpensive for routine needs as well a basic doctor's visit might cost around 15 to 30 dollars in medications and basic treatments are generally inexpensive.

Better private health care is available in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and some expats travel to Thailand for more complicated medical treatment.

But here's where Cambodia becomes almost impossible to beat for someone with very little money.

If you are 55 or older, staying here long term can be incredibly simple.

The water system is the foundation of everything.

By the 15th century, the Khmer capital had shifted south, away from Angkor toward the area around modern Phnom Penh, closer to the Mekong River and the trade routes that increasingly connected Southeast Asia to maritime commerce.

Angkor was gradually depopulated This was not a single catastrophic event.

Not a siege, not a plague, not a volcano.

It believed that rural peasant farmers were the true working class proletarians and the backbone of the revolution.

After a prolonged period of increasing their control over the rest of the country, the Khmer Rouge eventually captured the capital Phnom Penh on the 17th of April 1975, with Salath Sarr officially becoming prime minister in May.

Salath Sarr is better known as Pol Pot.

Once in power, Pol Pot could continue the doctrines that eventually saw between 1.7 and 2 million Cambodians exterminated.
