Philippe Ariès

But somewhere along the way, we stopped.

The French historian Philippe Ariès documented in the 1700s and 1800s how mourning in the Western world moved out of the village square and behind closed doors.

So hard times became private, they became quiet, and they became something to get over.

In modern times, they want you to get over this preferably by Monday, as in today you can get laid off, and on Friday feel the pressure to have your resume updated by Sunday.
