Philetus

Paul, John, they would name the names.

They would warn people by name about Diotrephes, about Philetus, about Hymenaeus, about Alexander the coppersmith.

They would warn.

Warn.

"But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness, and their message will spread like cancer.

Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, uh, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection," listen to this, "the resurrection is already past," or it has already happened, "and they overthrow the faith of some." Now, I, I pulled this up and I'm gonna read this.

And so Philip once said to his son, who, as the wine went round, plucked the strings charmingly and skilfully, "'Art thou not ashamed to pluck the strings so well? It is enough, surely, if a king have leisure to hear others pluck the strings, and he pays great deference to the muses if he be but a spectator of such contests.' Labor with one's own hands on lowly tasks gives witness, in the toil thus expended on useless things, to one's own indifference to higher things.

No generous youth, from seeing the Zeus at Pisa, or the Hera at Argos, longs to be Pheidias or Polycletus, nor to be Anacreon or Philetus or Archilochus, out of pleasure in their poems.

For it does not of necessity follow that, if the work delights you with its grace, the one who wrought it is worthy of your esteem.

Wherefore the spectator is not advantaged by those things at sight of which no ardor for imitation arises in the breast, nor any uplift of the soul arousing zealous impulses to do the like.

But shun, shun profane and vain babblings, for they will increase unto more what? Ungodliness.

And their word [clears throat] will eat as doth a canker, of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus.

Who concerning the truth, concerning the truth, they have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already and they overthrow the faith of some.

Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal- The Lord knows them that are his.

Avoid profane, idle talk, for such people will become more and more godless, and their teaching will spread like gangrene.

Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have deviated from the truth by saying that the resurrection has already taken place and are upsetting the faith of some.

Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands, bearing this inscription, The Lord knows who are his, and let everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord avoid evil.

In a large household there are vessels not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for lofty and others for humble purpose.

This is the cause of amputations of feet and legs.

If the gangrene moves far enough, it causes death to the whole body.

Among those who were spreading such teaching were Hymenaeus and Philetus.

They were wandering away from the truth and were now gangrene or death to the body of Christ.

Called them out by name.

He named Hymenetus and Philetus, so he named them again in 2 Timothy 2, 17 through 18, because their teaching was spreading like gangrene.

That's not a very nice description now, is it? So like Bryce and like Johnny and the fakeness of Brandon Lake and all these people, what they're doing is spreading like gangrene.

That's why the church is rotten right now, and it's falling apart.

But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene.

Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened.

They are upsetting the faith of some.

But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal, The Lord knows those who are his.

But shun profane and vain babblings, for they will increase unto more wickedness, and their word will eat as does a canker, of whom is...

Hymenaeus and Philetus.

who concerning the truth have erred, saying the resurrection is past already, and overthrow the faith of some.

Nevertheless, the foundation of Elohim, or Yahuwah, stands sure.

and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

So 2 Timothy 2, Paul tells this young pastor, Timothy warns the church about two dangerous teachers by name, Hymenaeus and Philetus.

Verse 18 says exactly what these two were teaching, that the resurrection had already passed, they were overthrown, and thereby overthrowing the faith of some.

Some still teach this false doctrine today.
