Philadelphia soul

It almost feels like he's sharing a moment of intimacy with you, which can really ground the experience.

Speaking of grounding, I found it intriguing how he blends Philadelphia soul with modern R&B.

It's such a rich musical heritage.

Definitely.

Yeah, you have to, right? I got some Philadelphia Soul.

If you don't know me by now, by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Love Train, the OJs, like that kind of thing.

And then James Brown, right? He's the birth of funk.

Once

you get into the 80s, you are leaving the imperial phase of Tom Bell's Philly Soul work, I would imagine.

I'm sure there are gems to be found, but when you really think about the great stuff from those bands, it's from earlier than this.

Yeah, they're having a hard time figuring out how to what they're supposed to sound like.

Their records mostly sound the same.

A lot of metal bands did that.

And there was just something about like Philly soul, all soul music was kind of like supposed to sound warm and organic in this way.

And when you paired it with 80s production, like something just fell out of it.

We do a lexicon of love tour.

And the audience know every word of every song because they're so good, and they just got very excited by the idea of blending things like the Sound of Philadelphia, those sort of big epic tracks which had strings and brass and sort of funky rhythms as well.

It was a very happy combination, and it just sort of gelled.

And oh my friends just might ask me.

And I think we like this.

So this is Dre and Vidal, right? And so they're from Philly, and we're Hall & Oates fans, so that sort of Philly soul, I think, finds its way in here.

So are the roots.

Yeah.

This might be my favorite song on the album.

Yeah.

And here, we talked about the Philly soul influence in a couple songs back.

Here, his vocal styling, there is Daryl Hall being pulled out, especially towards the end with the outro.

Gamble and Huff on this track are really at their peak form.

Like, this might be the best Philly soul slow song of them all.

Maybe second only to If You Don't Know Me by now.

But, man, it's so good.

All right.

And for me, this record was interesting because, again, I've listened to me and Mrs. Jones quite a bit, and I've listened to a decent amount of Philly soul, so I had high hopes for this record, and ultimately what I hear in this album is a very solid, mostly competent, somewhat good, once great soul album from the seventies.

Like it's not very standout ish as far as albums of that decade or even soul albums specifically.

And then he puts one out years later and acts like, fucking, what's wrong? I like soul music.

I listen to Sam Cooke and Philly Soul.

I think Peter could sing any Kiss song and it would sound awesome, with the exception of maybe a handful.

But

Well, it's a very soulful, smooth, swinging record.

It sounds like Philly soul.

[laughs] I love it.

[laughs] Well, it's very interesting you say that.

The most Philly soul record, uh, soul I've ever recorded was actually a song on my last album, Late Style, called Do Nothing If You Care.

Which, if you haven't heard that one, I recommend, which really came out of me and David Naegelen, my collaborator, being obsessed with Love T.K.O. by Teddy Pendergrass.

I've not even scratched the surface of the genres of music I'm going to be playing today.
