The programme ran its run on the 8th of February 1978 on BBC One and it was one of the longest running programmes on British television when it ended in in September 2008 after 31 series.

It was created by Phil Redmond, who was also responsible for the Channel 4 dramas Brookside and Hollyoaks.

The show was a springboard for many writers and directors, most notably Anthony Minghella, who went on to do The English Patient, amongst many others.

He was involved during the period that produced the famous Zamo drug storyline.
