Phentermine

Yeah.

Well, well, not even, it was like, uh, Phentermine and stuff like that, and asthma pills.

First I was, like, taking asthma medications.

What do the asthma pills do?

And it was on the market in France first in 1963, and then it hit the United States market in 73.

Phentermine was actually on the market as early as 1959 here in the United States.

And both of them had other indications, but Phenfluramine, the first Phen of Phen Phen, was seen as a weight loss drug that was kind of not very effective.

It was for short-term use.

And by the end of it, the original drug manufacturer had paid out billions, plural, in lawsuits, in payments.

And so the first drug, fenfluramine, it was pulled from the market altogether.

The second drug, Phentermine, actually didn't seem to have any effect.

When they looked at all of the studies, if anybody only took Phentermine, there was no effect.

If you're taking Phentermine right now, or if you're about to start, there's one mistake I see patients make again and again in the first few weeks.

And the strange part is, at first it feels like the medication is working extremely well.

The scale drops quickly, you're barely hungry, and you think this is exactly what I wanted.

But if you handle that early weight loss the wrong way, You can lose more than you intended, including muscle, and make maintaining your results much harder once your appetite starts coming back.

I'm board certified in internal medicine and obesity medicine, and in this video I'll show you the mistake I watch for with my own patients, why it happens so easily on Phentermine, and what I have them do instead to prioritize fat loss while protecting muscle.

Because the goal isn't just to make the scale drop as fast as possible.

It's to lose weight in a way you actually have a chance of maintaining.

Because the GLP-1s, I'm seeing it very helpful for some of my patients.

For example, I used to do weight loss and use Phentermine, which is more like It's like basically an amphetamine.

And people use that for a very, very long time, but it doesn't heal.

It doesn't really change your biology the way the GLP-1s do.

Burn is a reference to burn fat.

Phen, P-H-E-N. Phentermine, that's a reference to a prescription medication called Phentermine, which sometimes doctors will prescribe for weight loss.

It also was part of the infamous Phen-Phen combination many, many years ago that didn't have really any good proof that it worked, but companies made it.

And some people are no longer with us anymore because that it was the it was fenfluramine and fentramine.

Fentramine is still prescribed by some by some doctors.

So when a company's add the word fen to their name, they're trying to subconsciously make you think, oh, this is going to stimulate like fentramine is and you'll lose weight and stuff.

You know, there should be no Phentermine in a dietary supplement.

What there could be is a lot of caffeine or other stimulants that you want to be careful with.

We also have other weight loss medications.

In fact, there is, for example, Phentermine.

I prescribe a lot of Phentermine for, you know, many of my patients.

It's a great medication.

And that medication was approved by the FDA back in 1959.
