Czech President Petr Pavel is continuing his visit to the United States, attending the opening of the United Nations General Assembly's general debate in New York on Tuesday, together with Foreign Minister Petr Macinka of the Motorists' Party.

Nearly 130 heads of state and government are expected to attend.

Pavel will also take part in an event to protect children's rights in the age of artificial intelligence, co-hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

It therefore assumes that member states will come to the aid of the member under attack.

The Czech President Petr Pavel said on Sunday that he considers Fico's statement about Article 5 as serious.

If someone says that they are glad to be a member of NATO, in other words, that NATO protects us, but at the same time they are unwilling to get involved if anyone else comes under attack, then they have misunderstood what solidarity means, said Pavel.

I respect that Czech President Petr Pavel as a former NATO general would like to fight, therefore, I would welcome it if he respected that I prefer peace, Fico said in response.

In a speech delivered at the ceremonial swearing-in of military cadets on Saturday, President Petr Pellegrini emphasized that Slovakia should be an active member of NATO.

The country neither desires nor intends to be a passive member of the North Atlantic Alliance but rather an active and full contributor to the collective security system.

Um, and as you say, stood up in front of 250, uh, p- delegates from the, uh, defense field, defense companies, and, uh, defense attachés and all, all, all, uh, uh, this, uh, kind of people and said, um, "Why are you all talking about weapons? Why is nobody talking about peace?" You know, talk about read the room.

Um, he has obviously been banging on about this for some time, even when he, uh, made, uh, a failed in, in, in the end attempt to stand for president a few years ago against, uh, the former NATO general who won it, uh, Petr Pavel.

Uh, he questioned, you know, why Czech, um, men should die, uh, if, uh, Article 5 was triggered, and that obviously caused a storm of controversy.

President Petr Pavel will meet Prime Minister Andrej Babiš from the ANO party at Prague Castle on Monday evening to discuss foreign policy and current issues.

The talks will also focus on Pavel's participation in the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week, where he will head the Czech delegation.

Foreign Minister Petr Macek from the Motorists Party was also invited but will not attend following consultations with Babiš.

The analysis estimates that the demographic shift could eventually cost the state the equivalent of 3.3% of GDP annually through lost revenues and higher pension spending.

[instrumental music] The Czech crown jewels will be removed from their chamber at St. Vitus Cathedral on Monday ahead of their annual exhibition at Prague Castle.

The seven key holders, including President Petr Pavel, the Prime Minister, and the Archbishop of Prague, must all be present to open the crown chamber.

The St. Wenceslas crown, royal scepter, and orb will first be shown to schoolchildren from about 300 schools before the exhibition opens to the general public from the 19th to 28th of September.

Jordan's King Abdullah II and Queen Rania will visit the Czech Republic next Friday at the invitation of President Petr Pavel, the presidential office announced on its website.

The official visit will begin with a ceremonial welcome at Prague Castle, followed by a private meeting between the presidential and royal couples, and talks between delegations from the two countries.

A meeting with the media is planned at the end of the visit.

President Petr Pavel will meet Prime Minister Andrei Babish on Monday to discuss foreign policy coordination, including Pavel's participation in the UN General Assembly and other current issues.

The meeting will follow a ceremony to retrieve the Czech crown jewels from St. Vitus Cathedral, which both politicians are expected to attend as holders of the keys to the chamber.

The UN General Assembly takes place in New York in two weeks.

MPs overrode a Senate veto, which argued that the change amounted to an unconstitutional interference with the president's powers.

President Peter Pavel himself argued that he saw no reason for the change.

Opponents have said they will challenge the legislation at the Constitutional Court.

The lower house also overrode a Senate veto on a civil service law that would make it easier to replace state officials and bring employment rules closer to the labor code.
