For about two years now, leaders in the UK have been promising that soon people will be able to use a digital ID to prove their age when buying alcohol.

In late 2024, Peter Kyle, the technology secretary at the time, proclaimed that, "By next Christmas, you won't need to carry a wallet or risk losing important documents when heading out to celebrate." Almost two years later, the changes to the mandatory licensing conditions for alcohol sales in the UK that would make that possible are finally on the verge of happening.

The government has approved the bill, and sources say they expect it to be signed into law any time now.

That means a massive opportunity for the UK biometrics and identity sector.

Uh, the bill has not yet been signed.

Um, the, the, the hope is that it's, this is gonna happen this week, but um, you know, it remains unsigned.

So I wanna to ask you, Emily, w- would you put money on your being able to purchase a pint in a pub and use digital ID to prove your age this Christmas? Uh, you know, we ha- we were promised Christmas 2025 by Peter Kyle, I think, back in the day.

Um, it, uh, you know, are you, are you, how certain are you that we're gonna be able to go, or that UK drinkers are gonna be able to go to the pub and, and, uh, whip out their digital ID to prove their age this Christmas?

Yes.

That's another symptom of the turmoil, 'cause it w- it went to Peter Kyle, and then it went back to Jonathan Reynolds.

That is a fair point.

You know, there's Jonathan Reynolds who gets it going, who's now, uh, back as business and, and, and trade.

In between, you've got Peter Kyle, who was thought of to be something of a sort of activist.

It's his birthday today, by the way.

And maybe I'm being overly critical of the government here, but I can't help but feel that sometimes they are being blindsided by these major, major things that are happening.

Maybe they sent the email to Peter Kyle and missed the fact that Jonathan Reynolds had been reappointed business secretary.

That might have been the, uh, mi- might have been the problem.

And she said all the right things.

But then I looked around the room and I realized we'd had exactly the same conversation with Peter Kyle a year before, but they'd had to make the room bigger because there were more bereaved parents.

Jesus.

Yeah? So I think that we are not taking it seriously enough.

Yeah, I think the potential is, is more, probably more accurate.

And one story that I find [chuckles] very illuminating is, um, the former Minister of Digital Affairs in the UK, somebody called Peter Kyle.

At some point, a journalist, Chris Stogill, asked for a freedom of information request, and he asked for the queries that Peter Kyle had made to ChatGPT.

And [laughs] the minister had asked ChatGPT about m- making policy for AI, and ChatGPT thought that privacy protections were a terrible idea.

They were very burdensome.

I had a meeting this week with Lisa Nandy, the third Secretary of State I've met.

So I previously met Peter Kyle, and then Liz Kendall, and now Lisa Nandy.

So to try and get across because they need to base it on the design of the products, the features.

They need to focus on which sites have harmful features, algorithmic data that's being fed to them, stranger location.

But not only is that repeated, but Peter's vision is repeated as well.

It's recorded two times.
