You know, it was a great lesson in not knowing your value before you go into a negotiation and not overplaying your hand and not worrying about what other people get.

Just, you know, I was happy playing and I should have just, you know, but anyway.

So I had an offer to go back on an American League deal.

At the same time, a guy named Pat Ducharme, who was a huge agent in the hockey world, represented Bob Probert.

He was also one of the best criminal defense lawyers in Canada.

And do you have any feelings towards that?

[laughs]

Uh, there wa- there, there's been a lot of, uh, of those, uh, uh, Mickey Mouse guys, uh, end up being pretty big contributors, uh, on, on your teams.

I, I think I had one in Joe Pavelski, um, you know, in, in Dallas that was a sixth or seventh-round pick.

So no, but you know what? Uh, we, it's, it's a good point.

Um, I actually met with Schaefer this morning.

Uh, it was at the rink.

Our rookie camp started today.

How does that affect your kind of approach to the preseason into camp?

Yeah.

Uh, he was the ultimate teammate, the ultimate team guy, fantastic leader.

Like, what's that seven, eight, 10-minute process like for a coach?

Yeah.

Well, you know, it's not easy.

And I can t- I, I, I, you know, I'm speaking firsthand to that, and someone who's obviously, uh, you know, hasn't ha- handled every one of those situations exactly the way you'd like to.

I, I, I can tell you, you know, from what I've heard, I haven't been involved with teams like this, but there are teams out there, I think, uh, uh, the city you're living in might be one, where the coach actually gets, uh, some talking points, uh, prior to going out in front of the media, you know, whether they're analytics based or, uh, you know, messaging based.

Um, I, I haven't worked in that type of environment.

I'm not sure I'd want to.

the coach? Or is it just you gotta deliver the message and the players ultimately are the ones that gotta do it?
