And if all this talk of pancakes has made you hungry, Here's a recipe for early modern pancakes from Peter Brears' Cooking and Dining in Tudor and Stuart, England, adapted from a 1660 recipe in Robert May's The Accomplished Cook.

Take 8 ounces or 225 grams of flour, half a teaspoon of salt, and a quarter teaspoon each of ground nutmeg, clove, and mace.

Then sift these dry ingredients together into a bowl.
