So on January 11th, 2004, just eight days before their scheduled Sundance premiere, Variety announced that Lionsgate made a preemptive distribution deal for the worldwide rights to the movie.

President Peter Block said, quote, we haven't even seen the finished film yet, but we liked the concept and it's so rare to find a genre film where the world rights are available.

We didn't want to miss out on that again.

I couldn't figure out which film he might have been talking about missing out on prior.
