Isaac AzoutPANELIST

And if they do, they don't really get a shot at the big league.
Isaac AzoutPANELIST
18:43
So I'm very happy that Peter Bendix kept him because he wasn't a Bendix guy.
Isaac AzoutPANELIST
18:47
He sort of, He was already there when Peter came over.
Isaac AzoutPANELIST
18:51
And so it's nice to see him not only be kept with the Marlins, but also get a legitimate shot to be a pivotal factor for this team going forward.

It's those

three, Dee Gordon, Hanley, Luis Arias.
Isaac AzoutPANELIST
25:45
And of those three, of these, I guess, potential four, Otto has to be the least, the smallest name of anyone, the least... expected right of a former two-time designated for assignment waiver pickup by peter bendix luisa rise so even the

last couple years when he's been successful last couple years combined it was 257 those last two years combined it was a little bit better than the league average and last year in particular he was down to 246 like this is a guy that brought a lot of value to the team despite not being like that quintessential pure hitter so for him to turn into that and still be able to run the base as well as still be able to play shortstop at a confident level.
AJ RamosPANELIST
33:50
Okay, now we got to account for... okay they started to tell off to the end what are the things we can do now now they kind of have an idea that that process worked but now how do we support that better next year you know what i mean
Isaac AzoutPANELIST
34:02
right yeah this is this is the third year of peter bendix but i really consider it sort of the second year because that first 2024 season he had to really completely dismantle what was uh there's a bad poorly constructed team um that came in handmade so like this is his second full year and they've been competitive into September both times and I I think next year there's going to start being some pressure on Peter to really just hone this philosophy or whatever philosophy it is because I think expectations are starting to grow and like I said kudos to him in his front office because this is a team that has Javier sonoha in it every single day it had Leo Jimenez has a bunch of really small names that are performing and winning 80 games Two years in a row, hopefully they can complete 80 wins this year.
Isaac AzoutPANELIST
34:45
But I do think that next year you're going to have to start seeing at least some changes made or at least they can't be tailing off in September again.
Kevin BarralHOST
34:52
Hey, shout out to Javier Sanoja.
Jamie GoldmanHOST
15:34
You were 58-55 at the time, right in the mix for an NL wildcard spot, right in the mix for a playoff spot.
Jamie GoldmanHOST
15:43
And your owner, Bruce Sherman... came out and said that Peter Bendix, the GM, had the green light.
Jamie GoldmanHOST
15:51
These are the words that Sherman used, the green light, to go out and help this team and add players to make a push for the playoffs.
Jamie GoldmanHOST
15:58
And instead of that green light approach, that aggressive approach that Sherman was kind of alluding to, Bendix didn't.
Marc LuinoHOST
21:22
...
Marc LuinoHOST

Cutter's King, Peterson's King.
James SchianoHOST
21:26
Oh, like I, I set that line at like 18 and a half.
James SchianoHOST
21:29
[laughs]
Jeremy TachéGUEST
54:23
And so while that probably was the right baseball decision, given where the organization was at the moment, when fans hear... have any players traded away that they know the name of, that hurt sort of gets reignited.
Jeremy TachéGUEST
54:41
And so you can look at what Peter Bendix has done here, and it is obvious.
Jeremy TachéGUEST
54:47
This guy is a really, really bright general manager.
Jeremy TachéGUEST
54:53
The depth in this organization within the farm system and the depth of talent at the major league level is far superior to where they were when they actually made a run to the postseason in 2023.
Jack HarrisHOST
56:58
I'm curious, when you follow a team like the Marlins up close and when you're in that kind of market, you know, Does it feel, especially when you get that kind of disparity, like do people there feel like this is an example of the sport being broken? Does it feel like the Dodgers are just kind of this inevitable object in every team's path? And as it pertains to maybe the way fans, especially in a place like Miami, might look at the upcoming labor situation and a potential lockout and a potential salary cap, like is there a hunger there for things fundamentally with the sport to change?
Jeremy TachéGUEST
57:31
You know, I think it's complicated because I think that there is an understanding of where the sport is.
Jeremy TachéGUEST
57:40
And, you know, just up the state, we have the Tampa Bay Rays and Peter Bendix comes from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Jeremy TachéGUEST
57:47
And so there is this example right sort of right down the road of look at this team with a smaller budget.
Isaac AzoutPANELIST
12:57
And I think losing him hurt them a lot.
Isaac AzoutPANELIST
13:00
I think it hurt them more than Peter Bendix anticipated.
Isaac AzoutPANELIST
13:03
But I think that's a big key into why the offense hasn't been it has been good as of recently but i think overall the whole month of august it definitely took a step back stowers missing time in um missing a couple of weeks actually in august also i think hurt them a lot it was really rough timing and also throwing the injury to pete fairbanks really rough time and him and bender i know i'm stealing all of them but Those two injuries to the bullpen have really, really decimated that pen because now you're depending on Ekness and Ralston and all these guys that are not used to pitching this many innings, especially late in the year in their first big league season.
Isaac AzoutPANELIST
13:37
I think that's provided a lot of issues for the team.

10 MINS LATER

Isaac AzoutPANELIST
23:54
So I think, you know, those three are real key offensive pieces that can either be starters at the big league level or like you said, they're French players.
Isaac AzoutPANELIST
24:01
We're not sure yet.
Eli SussmanHOST
24:04
um yeah not to distract uh but there's this is a pretty good comment i think we could get into about kind of grading the way that bendix peter bendix has handled things this season in particular now that we've uh the dust has settled and uh we've seen the way that these moves we already brought up a few of them that have had direct negative impacts on the team like trading hicks and sticking around with leo jimenez And at the same time, some that have worked out really well to this point in the season that have made a big difference.
Eli SussmanHOST
24:34
Actually, now that I think about it, I'm trying to think of how many of these individual moves have made.
Josh AppelHOST
21:56
Some inconsistencies, but I mean, on the whole, I think you learned a lot about this group and the mindset that they carry.
Josh AppelHOST
22:05
And overall, given the payroll and kind of the bargain hunting that Peter Bendix and this front office have gone on, they've identified talent, they've developed some of it, and there's some real hope that the Marlins have something moving forward.
Josh AppelHOST
22:21
But it just seems as like at this point they're fading a bit away.
Josh AppelHOST
22:26
But hey, listen, every time we count this team out, they somehow manage to find a way to climb back in it and play some more meaningful baseball.
Ryan ClaryHOST
5:34
The Marlins, I actually like them just kind of as a long-term hope here.
Ryan ClaryHOST
5:38
But even with Peter Bendix, who has been a really good decision maker for the Miami Marlins, I think even then at times they still have not had a top 10 farm system.
Ryan ClaryHOST
5:49
They don't have a ton of talent down in the minor leagues.
Ryan ClaryHOST
5:52
They got a couple of guys that could pan out to be something, but overall, not the end of the world.
Johnny C.HOST
14:43
If your eyelids have been tampered with, we got you.
Johnny C.HOST
14:46
Peter Bendix is on the way on the astral realm.
Johnny C.HOST
14:48
He's galloping towards you on a fish horse.
Johnny C.HOST
14:51
We got you, bro.
Kevin BarralSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
31:00
But also going back a little bit, you were drafted in 2021, so you're sort of pretty long tenured here in the Marlins organization.
Kevin BarralSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
31:06
I want to see if there's any differences that you've noticed betw- since Peter Bendix joined the organization and took over the baseball operation department, compared to when Kim Ng was running things.
Kevin BarralSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
31:15
Just any differences that you've seen organizationally or developmentally?
Joe MackSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
31:20
Um, I mean, I would say one thing is, like, we're, we're very keen on getting better, very keen on, you know, working on what the game's telling us.
