Peter Beckett

Player was formed in LA in 1977.

English vocalist and guitarist Peter Beckett, who had previously played with Paladin, he teamed up with singer and guitarist Jesse Crowley, bassist Ron Moss, and drummer Jon Friesen.

The band crafted a polished soft rock sound featuring smooth vocal harmonies, clean guitar, and tight rhythm sections, everything that, uh, people call now yacht rock.

Player was perfectly tailored for West Coast adult contemporary and pop radio.

Smooth, smooth music, as we call it.

Now, the story behind Player's signature single Baby Come Back, that feel-good smooth song from a real bad heartbreak, it actually began with a real-life argument.

After songwriter Peter Beckett got into a massive fight with his girl at a Hollywood club, he actually got kicked to the curb, outside to the street.

Depressed and locked out of his apartment, Beckett went straight to his bandmate Jesse Crowley's house, and he was also reeling himself from a breakup.

I think that comes across in the song.

That's why it was so popular," said founding member Peter Beckett.

Honestly, Beckett is underselling things here, because it wasn't just a breakup for him, it was a divorce.

He wasn't lying about the song connecting with people, though.
