Pete Cowen

If you look hard, you'll see people that have millions or billions of dollars.

I mean, look at Pete Cowen, the, the man in black, one of the, um, world's most, uh, famous and successful swing coaches.

He, uh, said in an article that, um, people, um, really idolize the people that I work with, but what they don't realize is that I spend most of my time with miserable millionaires.

And so, um, if you want to live extraordinary life, and I in fact I wrote a book about it called The Best Possible Life, then you really have to understand human nature.

So I literally told my friends it was just I had to sort of go on mute and ask them, you know, not to get excited when it was going well or become, you know, don't worry about it and that, 'cause you obviously, you do get the peaks and troughs, and I just always found that, um, tough to get my head around really.

Who were the, you know, the mentors, if you like, in your early days? 'Cause I know that Pete Cowen came into your life, but who, who, who were the people that you did look up to and did pull you along?

Well, the professional at Hull Golf Club, a guy called Dave Jagger, who was a good, really good friend of Pete Cowen's.

They used to play together and travel around Europe in a camper van.

He played on tour, didn't he, David Jagger?

He was, he was effectively my, like my, my golfing dad.

Right.

Right.And again, he wa- he was quite opposite to Pete Cowen, obviously very into the instruction and the technical side of the game, whereas Dave was much more relaxed, much more natural.

So it's a big rotational thing.

Is that a Pete Cowen drill? 'Cause, like, Fitzy worked, uh, d- 'cause that's what he does.

I don't know if ...

Didn't Fitzy work with Pete Cowen at some point in his career, I feel like?

I'm not sure.

I, I mean-

And then he gets docked two strokes because the, the majors have this p- player conduct policy.

I remember, um, his c- his coach, Pete Cowen, was like, "This is super subjective that they gave him this penalty." He made an 11 on the hole.

He hit two balls out of bounds, and there was a two-shot penalty, and he still made the cut.

And not only did he make the cut, he finished tied for seventh.

So last year, some guy, crazy lunatic, was driving a stolen SUV.

He intentionally swerved into oncoming traffic, and he hit this team, this golf team, in their van head-on.

Seven team members and the coach, Doug Drenth, were severely injured, the coach especially, after turning the van to heroically shield his player from direct impact.

That team, this year in Michigan, they won the state championship, their first ever MHSAA Division IV State Championship, and they dominated.
