There's nobody else.

Nobody else coulda done this or would've done this." And, you know, I was back in my kind of favorite guesthouse in Peshawar on the Afghan frontier on the Pakistani side within kind of 36 hours and was pretty much on that story for the next 10 years solidly.

Sir Richard, you were serving in the British Army.

Where were you stationed, and did things change quickly?

Millions of Afghans crossed into Pakistan as refugees.

Peshawar became a junction for spies, journalists, clerics, aid workers, weapons dealers, charities and young men arriving to fight a holy war.

It was LinkedIn for Jihad before LinkedIn, except the professional endorsements were landmines.

This was the world that KSM entered when he travelled to Pakistan in 1987 and joined the Afghan Jihad.

It was also where Bin Laden built contacts and reputation.

Camps and guest houses created for one conflict became the professional networks of the next.

Men who had met in Peshawar or fought in Afghanistan knew how to raise money, cross borders, obtain forged documents and recruit people willing to die.

Eventually, bin Laden would come out of one of those.

There was a group in a place called, in a city called Peshawar in Pakistan, an organization called Maqtab al-Hidmat, the services organization run by a Palestinian by the name of Abdullah Azzam.

He had three deputies, Osama bin Laden, Ayman Zawahiri and Mohammed Saeed.

And those three guys would each run militant organizations, bin Laden, Al-Qaeda, Egyptian Islamic Jihad was Zawahiri, and Mohammed Saeed eventually would lead the left, the Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Pakistani group.

And I mean, just one final point on that.

Al-Qaeda's founding minutes, we now know that the formal meeting where Al-Qaeda was founded was in 1998 in Peshawar, Pakistan.

Well, they were recovered in Sarajevo and Bosnia in 2002 in the offices of a Saudi charity that was sort of part of this support network.

Like why would the Al-Qaeda founding minutes be in a charity in Sarajevo and Bosnia if it wasn't for the fact that this charity had some role in al-Qaeda's larger support network.

I should have fallen into the hands of the murderous Ghazis, had it not been for the devotion and courage shown by Murray, my orderly, who threw me across a pack-horse, and succeeded in bringing me safely to the British lines.

Worn with pain, and weak from the prolonged hardships which I had undergone, I was removed with a great train of wounded sufferers to the base hospital at Peshawar.

Here I rallied, and had already improved so far as to be able to walk about the wards, and even to bask a little upon the veranda, when I was struck down by enteric fever, that curse of our Indian possessions.

For months my life was despaired of, and when at last I came to myself and became convalescent, i was so weak and emaciated that a medical board determined that not a day should be lost in sending me back to england i was despatched accordingly in the troop-ship orontes and landed a month later on portsmouth jetty with my health irretrievably ruined but with permission from a paternal government to spend the next nine months in attempting to improve it i had neither kith nor kin in england and was therefore as free as air or as free as an income of eleven shillings and sixpence a day will permit a man to be under such circumstances i naturally gravitated to london that great cesspool into which all the loungers and idlers of the empire are irresistibly drained there i stayed for some time at a private hotel in the strand leading a comfortless meaningless existence and spending such money as i had considerably more freely than i ought So alarmingly did the state of my finances become, that I soon realized that I must either leave the metropolis and rusticate somewhere in the country, or that I must make a complete alteration in my style of living.
