Permanent revolution

It's just Rebels all over again.

And that's the Trotskyist interpretation, is you need to have permanent revolution.

You always need to be on a war footing.

You always need to be living in the military camp because, even inside your heart, you need to live like you are on permanent revolution status.

You don't get days off.

You don't get weekends.

While now largely dismissed as a failure, the Chinese road to socialism was, from the 1950s to the 1980s, regarded by many in both the developed and developing worlds as a possible alternative to authoritarianism within the Soviet state socialism on the one hand, and the inequities of Western capitalism on the other.

The theory of permanent revolution therefore emerges at a time of the Great Leap Forward to rationalize its impatient economic and political objectives.

However, when talking about the road to Chinese socialism, one s- one must be cautious in ascribing Mao, uh, to Mao a carefully pre-considered and folly coherent perspective on the socialist tradition, for his views in the 1950s and si- '60s frequently emerged in responses to unfolding events in the international arena and domestic context.

That is to say, Mao did not go into this with a solid plan.

Of course, this was party exclusive, although Mao, Mao does make some points to open the party to criticism, but he dies long before any of that happens.

This would have, uh, in effect, brought about contradictions, uh, into the open, and so that they could be evaluated and resolved without damage being done to the socialist construction as a whole.

Mao's belief in contradictions would persist in the socialist society be- and beyond that was an important in his theory of permanent revolution.

Uh, his theory of permanent revolution goes like this: "We must think about permanent revolution and not Trotsky's permanent revolution.

You're gonna end up in some kind of a false utopia, and I think that's where he thought aesthetically and politically the boom had ended up.

And so he was going to produce a very different kind of permanent revolution in art.

And so one way to do that was to be a complete contrarian, and that's what he was.

So, uh, but I'm generalizing again, and I don't wanna generalize.

I don't see it as something that makes me proud." So he said, "I'm not proud of it, but I am absolutely contrarian." So, and the phrase associated with Trotskyism, uh, as a technical part of Marxist theory, which one reviewer accused me of using wrongly, uh, i- in Major Arcana.

Well, I probably did, but I wasn't so much using it wrongly as I was using it metaphorically.

But Trotsky's theory is the theory of the permanent revolution, which is, of course, a very attractive phrase.

He meant something very technical by it, which was that if you're trying to make a Marxist revolution in a country that hasn't already fully industrialized and doesn't have a settled bourgeoisie, you don't need to go through that phase.
