SteveHOST
88:55
So I went back to it.
SteveHOST
88:56
It's a va- it's a vapor, so it's a pretty heavy Perique, uh, in it.
SteveHOST
89:01
So we talked about that, uh, with the Cajun Cake.
SteveHOST
89:04
So the Cajun Cake has a lot of vapor or a lot of Perique in it, so there's a lot of, uh, peppery notes.
NickHOST
89:11
Mm-hmm.
SteveHOST
89:12
And I said I noticed that when I stopped drinking our Jay Rieger on it.
ChrisHOST
89:44
... are you gonna say the-
SteveHOST
89:44
Yours is a little rough over there
BeauHOST
14:04
Yeah.
JayHOST
14:04
Carolina Red Flake or with Perique or anything else.
JayHOST
14:07
I know you sent some samples.
JayHOST
14:08
I'm sending him a tin.
BeauHOST
14:09
Yeah.
JayHOST
14:09
I have it out over here, of, uh, Carolina Red Flake with Perique.
JayHOST
14:12
But he's not gonna be in Vegas, uh, so I'm gonna give it to Trey Rice to bring to him.
BeauHOST
14:18
Very nice.
HunterHOST
6:13
Stewed fruit is absolutely there.
HunterHOST
6:15
And you can kind of pick up a little bit of that woodsy spiciness from the from the Kentucky, you can get a little bit of that plummy, just in spice note from the, from the Perique, but all three varietals kind of have spice and we'll get into that with the flavor aroma.
HunterHOST
6:32
But the cool thing is this was a, this is totally pressed that he did himself.
HunterHOST
6:38
And, um, he got some new rates.

17 MINS LATER

DakotaHOST
23:33
So, I say it in... every time we talk about pipe tobacco the retro hell this has a lovely retro hell you can definitely uh detect the dark fire and the perique in the retro along everything else there is a lovely little bit of spice in the retro it is really opening up the richness to this blend one of my slow retro hell it is uh like i said it's bold but it is by no means overpowering This is just a very deep, rich, nuanced approach to Virginia.
HunterHOST
24:07
With the spice note, the Virginians have a little bit of spice of their own, for sure.
HunterHOST
24:14
But then you get the kind of black peppery spice from the Perique, and on top of that, you get that almost... woody, incense-like, not incense, because that's the word Latakia, but that thing that Dark Fire Kentucky has going on.
HunterHOST
24:28
You know what I mean? So all of the varietals have its own spice note, and that through the retrohale, it's really amplified.
JoshHOST
58:11
Carolina Red Flake for me, it's, it's good, new, but it's one that, for me, I can tell it's just gonna age very well.
JoshHOST
58:20
And, you know, last year it was with Perique, so I got from...
JoshHOST
58:25
What, what year was last year? 2025.
JoshHOST
58:28
So I got the Red Flake from 2024, and now when I dip into it with two years of age on it, it's like, yeah, this is, this is going where I thought it would.
ChrisHOST
6:33
So it's a vapor.
ChrisHOST
6:35
Red Virginia's and Louisiana Perique.
ChrisHOST
6:37
Good stuff.
ChrisHOST
6:38
Is this the same Cajun cake as the other? That we've had previously?

16 MINS LATER

SteveHOST
22:45
And they're just... moisture content i mean we've talked about that before where it's almost a little wet if you open a new one or a new uh tin but with this aging it just really works well and makes it burn really nice you said this is virginia preeks red virginia's and then
ChrisHOST
23:05
perique yeah and i think that that's it i think that's it so and i don't remember how much but i think it's a good amount of perique
NickHOST
23:14
See, I think I might like Perique.
NickHOST
23:16
I might like that
DakotaHOST
1:42
So guys, this is obviously the 2026 iteration of Cornell and Dill's Carolina red flake.
DakotaHOST
1:49
Uh, we did 2025 Carolina red flake with Perique here on this podcast.
DakotaHOST
1:54
And, um, You know, this is one of those staple blends within the community.
DakotaHOST
1:59
Everyone knows about it.

12 MINS LATER

DakotaHOST
14:21
I'm going to smell it here.
DakotaHOST
14:24
So the first thing I notice is how it does not smell like a one-day-old McDouble with ketchup McDonald's wrapper.
DakotaHOST
14:37
So that was my big flavor note from last year's with Perique, was the ketchup-y note was so overwhelming to me.
DakotaHOST
14:43
I mean, it was just absolutely overwhelming.
JoshHOST
8:04
Also great.
JoshHOST
8:05
The pipe tobacco consists of Dark Fired Kentucky, Virginia, Burley, Perique, Turkish Small Leaf, which I presume is Oriental, and Black Cavendish.
JoshHOST
8:18
So it kind of sounds, you know, you hear those components and you kind of, your mind can go a thousand ways because there's, you know, so many different flavor profiles that could be vying for center stage.
JoshHOST
8:32
You don't really know what you're going to get.

21 MINS LATER

MikeGUEST
29:14
Sure.
MikeGUEST
29:15
Those would be the two because I can't really think of many others that stick out in my mind.
MikeGUEST
29:20
Carolina Red Flake would be on that for a lot of people, but I wasn't a big fan of it with or without Perique.
MikeGUEST
29:25
It just didn't hit that strong for me.
JoshHOST
39:24
Because somewhere in that warehouse, buried beneath mountains of Virginia...
JoshHOST
39:28
Burley, Perique, and Cavendish was the secret ingredient.
JoshHOST
39:32
The ingredient that made Cornell and Deal tobacco truly special.
JoshHOST
39:36
Seb picked up a small jar.

27 MINS LATER

SebHOST
67:00
I
JoshHOST
67:00
don't know if that's Burley.
JoshHOST
67:02
I think I'm getting a little Perique funk.
SebHOST
67:05
I can definitely see Perique.
HunterHOST
2:31
And so real quick, something I want to point out is that the description says layers of red Virginia, dark-fired Burley, Turkish, and Cavendish.
HunterHOST
2:40
The components, however, the list of components include Virginia, Perique, Darkfire, Kentucky, Burley, and Oriental.
HunterHOST
2:47
So the description has Cavendish, but not Burley.
HunterHOST
2:51
The components have Burley, but not Cavendish.

39 MINS LATER

HunterHOST
42:10
And so, like, I was talking about spicy, and we've mentioned, you know, there's Dark Fired Kentucky in this, which will give you spice.
HunterHOST
42:16
Dark Burley, which will give you spice.
HunterHOST
42:18
But there's also Perique, which is very spicy as well.
HunterHOST
42:22
And let me say this, make that clear.
