Periodization

But if that is running the show, then it immediately leads us in a very different direction.

It's about serving the market and it's about here what will sell and it's less about the principles guiding a traditional yoga in that sense So then to come to the timeline and when we're talking about what's modern obviously these are very crude Periodizations, but in the context of yoga, there's another dimension to it That's unavoidable which is colonialism and British colonial involvement in India in particular had a very significant effect on the transformation of yoga into something that we might call more modern which isn't to say that it's a great thing bequeathed by colonialism and that modern is good and pre-modern is bad it's more just to say that uh Something about the time frame seems to coincide also with a shift in priorities that was happening within Indian yoga independently of all of that, which was to think more about the use of yoga techniques for body focused purposes.
