Pensieve

I don't like that story.

I don't think it works as a book as well as the others because of the continual going back in time through Pensieve and all this.

It doesn't have the same forward momentum as the others.

So I find that a less interesting story.

She's got the horcruxes, but she's also got, and then she adds hallows on top of that.

So she's got a lot of, I've got to explain this crunchy element.

And the way she chooses to do that in the Half-Blood Prince is to keep us following Dumbledore telling us, telling Harry via the Pensieve what happened and then having almost like flashbacks, the equivalent of flashbacks.

That's because she's got this rule she's set about having to go through Harry.

Because, you know, thinking about what we learn about these characters, how much we learn, how long it takes over the course of a series to learn the little bit of backstory or... reasoning that we do get behind this characters, you know, history, motivations, et cetera.

Um, if we had a point of view besides potentially ruining our tension in the story, I think we would diminish the mystery, which would then diminish our curiosity and fascination with the villain, you know, and thinking of like, um, Harry Potter, we never go into Voldemort's head, but we learn some of his backstory through devices like the diary, like the Pensieve.

So there are these moments where we kind of get to go back in time and learn about this character in different ways, which gives us that... kind of boost to the fascination.

It's like just enough when we need it the most to keep us invested in this character and to prevent him from just being the black cat.

It says, "And Harry had seen his father use the spell on Snape, but he never told Ron and Hermione about this particular excursion into the Pensieve." That's just further throwing Snape off the scent of who was the Half-Blood Prince.

Harry is in the Pensieve reviewing Dumbledore's memories and asks about young Tom Riddle.

Dumbledore says, "Did I know that I had just met the most dangerous dark wizard of all time? No."
