Even better, though, today we have someone with us who is actually there when it all began.

Sally Dryer was one of the original child performers who gave the Peanuts gang their voices during those extraordinary early years.

She voiced Violet in A Charlie Brown Christmas before becoming Lucy Van Pelt in Charlie Brown's All Stars.

And most importantly for us today, it's the great pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

Yes.

And I love that because it's very easy for those of us looking backwards through the lens of 60 years of history to turn everything about it into this big historical landmark event.

We know what became of the Peanuts and we know that these specials became classics, but you were a child and none of that future was apparent at the time.

Like, a lot of the displays, they kind of suck.

Like, they're just cardboard, like, plywood cutouts of, like, Peanuts characters that are then painted on.

The

weird thing is that one of the highlights for the Trail of Lights is, like, the very first thing you do.

They're back.

All the Little Peanuts characters in a happy Halloween special that's filled with delightful, heartwarming adventures from their wonderful cartoon world.

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

On Halloween night, the Great Pumpkin rises out of his pumpkin patch and flies through the air with his bag of toys for all the children.

While Linus waits for the Great Pumpkin, ghosts and goblins, witches and owls make the scene with Charlie Brown and his Peanuts playmates off on a haunting spree that's filled with surprises.

The animated special becomes a seasonal classic, blah, blah, blah.

The 25-minute cartoon draws on a recurring plot line from Charles M. Schultz's Peanuts comic, which is Linus believing in the Great Pumpkin.

Obviously, we know that.

This came out a year after the Christmas one, and they rushed it into development because the Christmas one was such a gigantic surprise hit for CBS in 1965, December 1965.

And I'm thinking about it, man.

I guess I never wondered whether the Peanuts characters were a big deal outside of newspapers before the Christmas Charlie Brown movie.

I wonder if kids read books about Charlie Brown or if it was just a newspaper thing.

How big were both of those in your home? Because the only reason I'm bringing this up is I think I've seen The Great Pumpkin maybe twice.
