You know this guy? You've seen him before.

And Paul Mescal is playing Paul McCartney.

I don't know who anybody is.

These are young Gen Z actors.

Aftersun was my favorite movie of that year, and I was thinking about the fact that this was the moment that we became aware of Charlotte Wells as a filmmaker.

But also, it was kind of the time that I think a lot of people became aware of Paul Mescal.

He had been in other things before this.

Uh, but you know, this was kind of his f- kind of first big breakout film role.

He plays a father who is taking his young daughter on a vacation, and as we begin to study over the course of the film, we understand that he is having some kind of mental health issues that he's dealing with, and the daughter, who was, you know, a tween at the time in the late '90s when the vacation happened, is in the present day thinking back about her father, and so the movie's very much a memory piece.

Paul Mescal got, uh, nominated for Best Actor for this for the Oscars, and after that he did things like Gladiator and Hamnet.

And while I've liked some of those performances since then, he's never made anything that has been as singular, uh, as Aftersun, uh, was.

Uh, it premiered in Cannes in Critics' Week for first and second time filmmakers.

Also, my worst week ever, because I know that one's a downer.

But have you seen Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn, Barry Keon transform into the Beatles to recreate an iconic 1964 moment? And it's really not giving.

Well, no, it's

a movie.

For instance, she, you know, she's, she's, she's since she shot to fame with Punisher, there's been so much speculation about her private life and the whole thing of, like, some of these lyrics unpicking the relate.

Like, Gov- Governor's Waltz, I know we'll come to tracks like that is purportedly the breakdown of her relationship with Mescal and the meeting of Bo Burnham, if you read it a certain way.

I think she probably, she, she ...

And she came off social media having been very, very online, wanting to be much more private, and admitting that, like, her lyrics are a bit oblique.
