Arizona is the only state in the U.S. that elects a mine inspector.

But what separates one candidate from another, and what should voters be looking for in a mine inspector? Laura Holansky talked to both candidates in this year's race to find out what differentiates them.

Ever since 1912, Arizona has been electing its state mine inspector rather than appointing it.

Their duties include overseeing the safety of 650 mines, as well as an estimated 100,000 abandoned mine openings in the state.

While the position is elected, candidates need to fulfill certain experience requirements.
