Bounced from job to job.

He kept getting all these coordinator head coach jobs.

It's just so frustrating when you know the talent that this team has, and they're not figuring out creative ways to use them.

Reminds me of about 22 years ago, I was watching a Jets-Patriots game with my dad, and Paul Hackett was the offensive coordinator.

Frank Reich's better than Paul Hackett.

Paul Hackett was Nathaniel Hackett's father.

He was Jets offensive coordinator for four years under Herm Edwards.

And I remember at one point in that game, my dad's sitting on the couch.

He turns to me, he goes, if I can figure out what the Jets are running, don't you think Bill Belichick's going to be able to figure out what the Jets are running? And while Frank Reich's not as bad as Paul Hackett, It's kind of the same concept because I think, like you said, you or I can figure out a lot of the stuff the Jets are running in these games.

Yeah, and they have to figure out a way to get their players involved.

And I was very lucky because my dad knew some people.

I got with Paul Hackett, who was a great quarterback coach, former coordinator of the Cowboys and the 49ers.

And then I got around Mike Holmgren.

But it was Walt Harris at Tennessee.

You had John Robinson.

You had Paul Hackett.

Who was right before Carroll? Was that Hackett? It was Hackett.

And then they got Pete Carroll and it kind of all stabilized out.

He's a Trojan.

He takes the call, and he's your new coach.

But I just kind of go back to what you just said a second ago about Pete Carroll, that they went through Larry Smith, they went through Paul Hackett, they tried John Robinson 2.0, they were doing all of these things, and then they kind of tried to hire Dennis Erickson and Mike Belotti and Mike Riley, and they whipped on all those guys and ended up on Pete Carroll, and it's kind of a, hey man, this is the best we could do, and it was the best thing that ever happened to the program in the last 25 years, and he wasn't the sparkly little thing.

But he had coached in the

Uh, you got Mike Garrett, uh, athletic director, who's also down to his last strike.

He inherited John Robinson, uh, 2.0, and then, uh, hired Paul Hackett, neither of which worked out.

Um, so you got this kind of convergence of these two people kind of down to their last strike, so to speak.

Um, and they made it happen.

I'm going to Eastern Michigan." And that's how I ultimately ended up there.

Which actually worked out, because actually at the time they had, um, Paul Hackett was the head coach.

And at that particular point, there were rumblings that potentially if he had a bad year, then he may be gone, and then I would fall into that whole rotation of coaches.

Mm.
