Paul Foot

But David's story catches the attention of Private Eye, Britain's sharpest satirical magazine, known for skewering hypocrisy and sniffing out corruption.

Somehow she got a letter to Private Eye, to Paul Foot.

Paul Foot was a renowned investigative journalist at Private Eye.

He'd already made his name exposing corruption and fighting miscarriages of justice from the Birmingham Six to the John Paulson scandal.

There's still a private eye award called the Paul Foot Award for investigative journalism.

Paul Foot was really interested in it because it set up this kind of precedent for that you could be basically arrested and charged with anything on a fake confession.

Obviously, recording interviews now have changed that.

So it was really important.
