Patterson Hood

You can't think of a more poetic explainer than that.

Patterson Hood, right? Can write a song.

That creep can write, man.

Yeah.

So that falls to the bronze for me.

One of the things that's pretty cool about Navy Sheets is Patterson Hood lends backing vocals on that song.

which Patterson Hood, Drive-By Truckers, is very much in the fandom of the unified scene.

So, I mean, that definitely has, that's something going for the song, for sure.

Which then brings us to The Smidge, which is one of my more favorite songs off of Heaven Is Whatever.

So he was in the Muscle Shoals area.

And I think one interesting detail is he got to know David Hood, Patterson's father, who we talked about, I think, in our first episode on DBT, before he ever met Patterson.

David Hood, as we mentioned, he was a Muscle Shoals musician.

And like a lot of the Muscle Shoals session people, he was playing in various venues around town.

And David kind of took him under his wing.

He became sort of a surrogate father, which is interesting.

And at the time, Patterson was off touring with DBT, of course, because that's what they're doing.

But eventually, Patterson and Iswell did meet up.

Oh, great.

And Patterson Hood from the Drive-By Truckers as guests, and it is really impressive, I have to say.

I've been holding on to things I should And as I watch the days go by, it's a mystery.

In times like this, as I wonder how it all escapes from me.

I played that just once.

It was in St. Paul recently on my tour with Patterson Hood.

And what happened was I was kind of You know, when the ice invasion of Minneapolis happened in January, I was talking a lot.

It's my hometown.

I'm a roller coaster guy, so I would really love this.

My band, Drive-By Truckers, the lead singer, one of the lead singers, Patterson Hood, his mom got married at Dollywood.

Oh, believable.

I love it.

And I'll remind you that he co-produced Gangsta Billy and also recorded the live album for them.

And then Patterson Hood on guitars and vocals.

Rob Malone is now on guitars and vocals.

On the live album, when they were a quartet, Rob was playing bass.

Take it as gospel, as the saying goes.

Okay, so the next song is 72, parenthetically, This Highway's Mean.

Yeah, and real quick, the first two songs were Patterson Hood songs.

This is our first Mike Cooley song on the record, and I don't have it in front of me for Gangsta Billy's the first record.

We mainly or I mainly want to talk about the musical influences that go into the band's music.

So we can't really talk about drive-by truckers and where they come from without talking about two key individuals, Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley.

Patterson Hood grew up in Florence, Alabama, the son of David Hood.

And David Hood was a trombone player, also from North Alabama, trombone player, primarily a bassist.

worked at Fame Studios for Rick Hall.

And so he was like, well, let's do another song.

And the other song they did was Kodachrome.

And Patterson Hood and I are the same age, basically three months apart.

And if anything, I actually feel like he helped publicize them more when he left because people wanted to know where he was.

And then you got Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley now looking to tour with Isbell because he's a name, right? Unless you're in certain circles, right? If you're in certain circles, drive-by truckers are like legend for you.

But right now, I feel like Isbell's pulling them with him to help them out.

And when they do live stuff together, it's amazing.
