But because of its history of having been preserved in the 19th century and by a woman, quite apart from the fact that it's John Crosby, possibly Shakespeare, it's vernacular architecture, etc., It's the campaign of the earlier 19th century and Mariah Hackett's role in it that actually helps to build up the support that means that it's not demolished and enables Patrick Geddes to organise its removal, lock, stock and barrel.

And it's reconstructed down in Cheney Walk, where it's then owned by the University of London, used as a women's hostel, and it's now in private ownership.

So it's had a very checkered history where it keeps on being reinvented.

And really, if you come to Edinburgh, that's a place most people would enjoy looking at.

And then Patrick Geddes.

He's quite interesting, I think, from the point of view that he's seen so much as a Mr.

Rational, Mr. Brainbox, Mr.

It appeared in his work.

The baronialisation of Edinburgh Castle is probably one of the strong things because that was altering the profile of the castle, especially as viewed from the south and southeast.

and restoration of St. Giles that I've already mentioned, and Patrick Geddes' arrival in town, and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, which is crusted with statues and inside painted friezes and so on, and of course the portrait collection.

So in a way, the building itself is a Scottish history written in stone.
