But to my understanding, the River Line was the first DMU transit system to heavily involve freight rail, as you can obviously see here.

On the southern end, the River Line connects to Philadelphia by way of a transfer with PATCO, which I believe was the first fully automated metro in the United States.

And this gives it a connection into, of course, downtown Philadelphia, making it more convenient than just ending short of downtown.

On the other end, the DMU actually connects with the Northeast Corridor itself, Amtrak trains.

It peels away from the freight mainline and then very, very quickly goes down a hill and ducks underneath it, and this puts it at ground level heading into Camden, New Jersey.

There's a brief segment of DMU exclusive right-of-way, then it turns 45 degrees and it has a station at Walter Rand Transportation Center.

This is where you transfer to the PATCO high-speed line for service into downtown Philadelphia.

And it also has a double crossover at this station for operational flexibility.
